Let’s face it. In today’s day and age, the concept of an ID card is bullshit. They don’t prove who you are; if that is what they were for, they wouldn’t expire. Your identity, who you are doesn’t expire, why should the card?
The purpose of an ID card is control. Their purpose is access, permission, and authorization. And they are redundant. You need a Driver’s License to drive, a passport to travel, a Student ID to go to college, and a military ID to be in the Army. You have to have a concealed weapons ID to carry a sidearm and an AARP card to prove that you are old and deserve a discount.
When will it end? It’s ridiculous!
I’m sorry, sir, but your ID has expired, and you need two forms of ID to get this or that or the other.
Excuse me? The ID expired yesterday. I’m still the same person. I didn’t expire!?!
As technology advances, so too should our concept of identification versus authorization. We need a single ID method that doesn’t expire, and with which authorizations (permissions, access, etc.) are coordinated.
We need interoperability.
I don’t have all the answers. I don’t know all the details. However, I do know that IDs are bullshit. We’re not proving who we are. We are verifying that we are allowed to do something.
We are verifying that we got permission.
Well, we don’t need permission from anyone to be ourselves, and we shouldn’t have to prove it. Not like we do today.
