I have had quite a bit of time on my hands the last week or so recovering from a broken fibula. Yesterday, I had surgery to screw everything back together. I simultaneously feel like the bionic man and one of my YouTube projects where I always like to combine metal with some other object. In this case, a metal plate and screws were permanently affixed to the bones in my lower leg.
So what is a guy to do with this much time on his hands, relegated to lying down, foot in the air, and taking Oxy-something every four hours?
Well, how about reading?
Although not new, Grit: The Power of Passion and Perseverance is proving to be a new favorite book. Written by Angela Duckworth, Grit discusses the secret to outstanding achievement.
I bought the audiobook on Audible. It’s read by the author, and she does a fantastic job. Credit finding this book goes to Seth Godin, he quoted her famous formula for achievement on his Podcast Akimbo.
Talent x Effort = Skill
Skill x Effort = Achievement
Talent devoid of effort will not lead to achievement. Say what?
Effort is critical to achievement. Effort is a multiplier in both equations.
What beautifully effective simplicity.
This formula, delivered to me outside of the context of her book, had a profound impact on me and piqued my interest to such an extent that I first wrote it in my journal (as not to forget), and second, bought the book the first chance I got.
Recovery through Reading
I’m sure this book won’t last throughout my recovery, but I will definitely enjoy it while it does.
