Who are you or What do you do?

This is who I am

Pleased to meet you. So… What do you do?

What do you do? Why do we ask this question? Is it to get to know someone, a way to quantify someone? Is it a way to put someone in a box, to understand them? Are we genuinely interested in getting to know the person?

Initially, asking this question is innocuous enough, until you hear a response you didn’t expect. A response that makes you think.

Oh, you’re a doctor, a lawyer, a Soldier, an astronaut. You work for NASA. You don’t have a job!

Regardless of initial intent, categorization is at work. Profiling is occurring. What box do I put them in?
